How long have you been doing it?

37s [SPEAKER_00]
Thirty six years.

39s Yeah.

41s [SPEAKER_01]
So can you say I've been working in refineries for thirty six years?

45s [SPEAKER_00]
No, I've been out here for nine years and I've done other industrial jobs throughout my career.

52s Tell me what you like about working in a refinery.

55s I like the people out here and I like the safeguards for the safe environment that they have out here for us.

63s I feel safe out here.

65s [SPEAKER_01]
I haven't been there, and from what I've seen, I don't think so.

82s Oh, definitely.

90s [SPEAKER_00]
Definitely it does.

91s Yeah.

92s It's our safety that we're dealing with here.

95s [SPEAKER_01]
you know we make we make the you know I'm trying to think how to say this we make the safest and most like to that like make the cleanest gasoline under the safest standards

119s [SPEAKER_00]
Have you heard anything about the future of

134s Well, you always hear a lot of things until it actually, you know, comes down the pipe.

141s You never know.

143s You always hear rumors.

145s Until it really happens, you just kind of sit back and wait.

153s [SPEAKER_01]
Have you heard about Venetia announcing its closure?

154s [SPEAKER_00]
Yeah, Valero?

155s Yeah.

155s Yeah, heard about that one.

157s And that's too bad.

159s That's not good for the community.

165s drive down the economy, definitely put people out of jobs.

169s That's a sad situation.

171s Hate to see them go.

177s What does it do to a family when there's a layoff like that?

178s It puts total hardship on them.

180s They have to go find another job, another career.

185s It really puts a family in a bad position.

193s [SPEAKER_01]
some politicians in California are thinking it would be better just to import refined fuel into California from other countries?

202s How do you feel about that?

203s [SPEAKER_00]
I don't think that would be a very good idea.

205s [SPEAKER_01]
That would put a lot of American people out of work.

219s [SPEAKER_00]
Well, definitely drive up the prices.

222s It would be a financial impact.

231s [SPEAKER_01]
Do you think the refineries create good jobs for a community?

233s [SPEAKER_00]
Oh, most definitely.

235s There's a lot of people employed here.

238s Yeah.

242s They are good jobs.

244s They are.

244s There's so many departments out here, so many divisions and specialties.

253s It'd be sad to see this go.

260s [SPEAKER_01]
Do you think that refineries are good for these local communities?

262s [SPEAKER_00]
I do.

262s I do.

264s They have a little bit of a distance away from the community, so I don't think it's that much of a hazard.

272s [SPEAKER_01]
They put millions of dollars into the local economy just from all the economic activity.

279s When a refinery closes, what do you think that does to those local businesses?

284s [SPEAKER_00]
Oh, it shuts down everything around it.

287s Small businesses, restaurants, gas stations, of course.

302s [SPEAKER_01]
What would you tell the politicians about the importance of keeping refineries open?

309s [SPEAKER_00]
Well you keep this refinery open and you keep everybody employed in this area and I would ask you not to do that.

321s [SPEAKER_01]
Not to do what?

322s [SPEAKER_00]
Shut down the refinery.

327s I would ask politicians not to shut down this refinery and put people out of work.

346s [SPEAKER_01]
What has working at this refinery allowed you to do in your life?

350s [SPEAKER_00]
have a very good career.

354s It's been really good to my family.

356s I've learned a lot here, so I was able to grow here and be a part of a team.

367s [SPEAKER_01]
Outside of work, what is it allowed?

371s [SPEAKER_00]
, we're able to go on trips and afford things that normally probably couldn't do it.

376s [SPEAKER_01]
It's so nice.

378s So many people have talked about the trips they can take with their families.

383s It's really nice.

384s That's something we've gotten from everybody that it's given them this time, that kind of time of leisure with their kids and their wives.

394s It's really nice.

395s [SPEAKER_00]
It is.

396s [SPEAKER_01]
Really nice.

402s So I'm going to ask you just to repeat some lines back to me if you're comfortable with that.

416s We keep, I'm sorry, is that over?

419s We keep your commute affordable.

423s [SPEAKER_01]
Do you get that?

426s Are you getting that?

427s I can hear you.

427s Which what?

427s Are you getting that ticking?

429s [SPEAKER_00]
I don't hear the ticking.

434s [SPEAKER_01]
It's okay.

455s [SPEAKER_00]

462s We should make it in California.

477s Okay.

477s Say it again.

478s Made in California by Californians.

482s [SPEAKER_01]
Keep our jobs in California.

483s [SPEAKER_00]
Keep our jobs in California.

487s [SPEAKER_01]
Okay, this one is a two part.

489s So I'll give you the first half and the second half.

493s If more refineries close, we will lose thousands of jobs.

497s [SPEAKER_00]
If more refineries close, we will lose thousands of jobs.

502s [SPEAKER_01]
How will California make up for these losses?

504s [SPEAKER_00]
