8s [SPEAKER_03] My name is Brianna Park and I'm seventeen years old and I go to Hamilton's Fraser High School and I'm here to try out as a McDonald's crew member.

46s [SPEAKER_03] Pull the fingers up.
50s [SPEAKER_04] Once she's got a handle on the gloves, Brianna gets a demonstration from the master burger builder.
66s And now it's Brianna's turn.

103s [SPEAKER_01] Eddie, don't fall, don't fall, don't fall.
110s [SPEAKER_03] And then just put it in the center and just hold it over.
117s Hold it again.
118s [SPEAKER_01] And then underneath.
119s Cool, and then slide it down.
121s [SPEAKER_02] Cool, all done.
122s Easy?
123s [SPEAKER_01] No, not easy.
125s I thought it was pretty smooth.
127s But let's move on to fries now.
130s It's good.
130s When I just first started here, I just sort of earned some money.
133s But now I think it's a really good opportunity and a good career.
138s And just shake it up.
140s Cool.
140s Perfect.
141s [SPEAKER_00] We're known for our training.
143s We do not need any experience for a person coming in.
146s And in Oliver's case it was the same thing.
148s He was hired as a school leaver and then he progressed his way through.
152s [SPEAKER_02] I think the benefits of working at McDonald's are that we provide a fun, flexible working environment so employees can work their shifts around their other activities, whether that be sports or school commitments.
173s We provide extensive training to all of our crew members.
176s Learn what you earn, we say at McDonald's.
178s [SPEAKER_01] It's probably my favourite part is the people that I work with.
182s They're always exciting and cool people from all over the world.
186s And it's flexible with all my sports that I play.
189s And then the opportunity to grow into a career.
192s Those are probably the three main parts.
195s [SPEAKER_00] So Oliver's gone through the basic training on the floor.
198s Then he's promoted to a crew trainer.
202s After that he's done his skills verification where he's got promoted to a shift supervisor.
207s [SPEAKER_04] I'll show you how it's done.
233s I think the target serving times for the present window is sixty seconds, so teamwork is really important, with different parts of the order coming in from different stations.
242s [SPEAKER_01] One more coat will come up for the next order, so that's for the second order.
249s The order's complete, so we just strap it up.
252s The screen keeps tabs on the relative performance of McDonald's restaurants nationwide, and Brianna at Frankton's seems to be doing pretty well.
277s So how are you finding everything?
279s [SPEAKER_03] Good.
279s It's really interesting.
280s I love the machines.
281s [SPEAKER_01] Yeah, they work cool, eh?
283s Yeah.
283s Can I hand out the window?
286s [SPEAKER_03] Hello.
287s Hey there.
287s Hello.
289s Thank you.
290s You're welcome.
292s [SPEAKER_04] Brianna's put to the test when a customer changes a boy's toy to a girl's toy.
296s [SPEAKER_03] Oh, that's OK.
298s [SPEAKER_04] Diplomacy is always an asset when dealing with the public.
302s [SPEAKER_03] Here you go.
302s Thanks.
303s Have a nice day.
305s [SPEAKER_04] .
305s Well, Brianna did okay at the present window.
307s Next stage in her training, the art of making a good coffee.
312s It's worth noting that all McDonald's employees from managers and franchisees, even the CEO, have worked as a crew member at some stage in their career.
330s [SPEAKER_03] Yeah?
331s Yep.
332s Done?
332s Yep.
333s [SPEAKER_01] Cool it out.
341s [] Cool.
341s Cool.
341s [SPEAKER_04] And now this one I'll lift it onto this.
342s [SPEAKER_02] Cut.
342s Whoops.
343s [SPEAKER_04] .
344s Okay, Brianna needs a little more practice with coffee making, but if she decides to become a crew member, there are plenty of opportunities.
352s [SPEAKER_02] Last year we announced we're reinvesting over a hundred million dollars in upgrading our existing restaurants and building new restaurants.
358s So that would bring our staff numbers from over nine thousand to just under fourteen thousand staff.
365s [SPEAKER_04] .
366s So what did Brianna think about the job?
368s [SPEAKER_03] It was a good experience.
369s It was a lot of fun and I'm very impressed with Ollie's progress over the last two years.
375s The fact that he could go from being a crew member to being shift manager is really cool.
379s [SPEAKER_01] Brianna, she did really well with the customer service side of things and with the present window she did really well and we got to number one drive through ranking in New Zealand while she was there.
390s and with the burger making, she just may be a bit more training as well.
393s But all in all, she'll be a good crew member.
396s [SPEAKER_04] McDonald's offers a fun, flexible working environment.
399s Being a food service industry, personal presentation and hygiene are important.
404s McDonald's provide on the job training, but skills in customer service and teamwork are helpful.
409s , there are plenty of possibilities for advancement and study including the national certificate in hospitality, quick service restaurants level two for crew roles and level three for shift supervisors.
446s Supporting local content so you can see more of New Zealand on air.
